PEEPEE PAD TRAINING NOT WORKING

Question
QUESTION: MY 9 1/2 WEEK OLD BOY MALTEPOO STAYES IN THE UTILIY ROOM AT NIGHT.HE CAN FREELY MOVE AROUND AN AERA OF ABOUT 3' WIDE AND 6' LONG. HE PEES SOMETIMES ON THE PAD BUT SEEMS TO BE HOLDING HIS MOVEMENTS UNTILL I LET HIM OUT IN THE MORNINGS. HE STAYS IN FROM ABOUT 10:30 OR 11:00PM TILL ABOUT 5:30 OR 6:00AM. MY PUPPY IS STRICTLY AN INSIDE DOG AND EATS PUPPY CHOW WITH A LITTLE SCIENCE DEIT MIXED IN, I'M TRYING TO SWITCH HIM OVER TO SCIENCE DEIT.

ANSWER: What is the problem with the housebreaking, Shannon? I don't understand. Would you *rather* he pooped on the pad instead of waiting until you take him out? I can't figure out why on earth you'd want that, but that's the only thing I can comprehend about your 'problem' based on the information you've given.

There really is no huge difference between Puppy/Dog Chow and Science Diet. I would suggest that you take a few minutes to read the following page, and then get back to me if you have any questions about how to pick a better food for your dog:

QUESTION: SORRY I CONFUSED YOU. MY QUESTION IS WHAT CAN I DO TO PEEPEE PAD TRAIN MY 11 WEEK OLD PUPPY (PREVIOUSLY I SAID 9 1/2 WEEK OLD, I WAS WRONG,SORRY). I TOLD YOU WHERE HE WAS STAYING AT NIGHT. THE PROBLEM IS HE SEEMS TO BE HOLDING HIS MOVEMENTS ALL NIGHT UNTILL I LET HIM OUT IN THE MORNINGS. I HAVE A PEEPEE PAD ON THE FLOOR IN THE ROOM WITH HIM SOMETIMES HE USES IT, MOST OF THE TIME HE HOLDS IT TILL I LET HIM OUT. HE WILL TRY TO GO ON THE CARPET EVEN IF I'M STANDING RIGHT THERE WITH HIM. WHAT CAN I DO TO PEEPEE PAD TRAIN HIM?
ANSWER: At 11 weeks old, you need to be taking him either outside or to the pee pee pad at least once every 3 hours, and also as soon as he wakes up, after playtime, and within 20 minutes of eating. If he tries to go on the carpet, or in another part of the house instead of on the pee pee pads, say "NO" in a firm tone of voice, and quickly get him to the pee pee pad, which I recommend placing in a shallow cat litter box, to provide clear boundaries for the dog and allow for easier cleanup.

I still cannot figure out why you would want to encourage a puppy that is already holding it until you can take him out, to go potty in the house, but if that's what you want, then go for it!

I've given advice on this subject to many, many other people. Please go through my previous answers and try the suggestions you find there, too.

QUESTION: I DO NOT WANT HIM TO GO IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!
YOU MUST NOT HAVE READ THE PART WHERE I SAID THAT HE STAYS IN THE UTILITY ROOM AT NIGHT OR IF I HAVE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE, WHICH IS 3' X 6', WITH A PEEPEE PAD ON THE FLOOR FOR HIM TO GO ON.I WILL NOT TAKE HIM OUTSIDE UNTIL HE HAS HAD HIS 12 WEEK PARVO SHOT. I JUST LOST A PUPPY TO PARVO 2 WEEKS AGO. I DO NOT WANT HIM TO GO ON THE CARPET. I WANT HIM TO GO ON THE PEEPEE PAD BUT HE SEEMS TO GO ANY WHERE BUT THERE. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPLY YOU ARE NOT UNDERSTANDING ME. I WILL SEEK HELP SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Answer
I am understanding you fine, Shannon. I just did not understand why you would rather your dog go to the bathroom inside (on pee pee pads) instead of outside, when he was already doing so well at holding it until you took him out. Most people would kill for a 9 week old puppy that would hold it all night!

If you just lost a puppy to parvo 2 weeks ago, there is still a very high risk of your current puppy contracting the disease, even if he does not go outside. You can bring it inside on your shoes, and if your other puppy also had access to inside your house, then the disease is already in your home as well. I wish you luck as far as that goes.

If you want the puppy to 'go' on the pee pee pad, just leave him in the utility room until he does. When you're home, keep him leashed to you or confined to the room you are in, so that when you see him getting ready to 'go' on the floor, you can quickly get him to the pee pee pad.
