time to start breeding?

Question
Hi, I am interested in starting to breed my female yorkie. She just had her first heat cycle at the beginning of the month so I anticipate another one in the near future. What I'm wondering is if there is any reason to wait any longer to start breeding or if she's good to go now?

Thanks

Answer

Hi Dave,

The recommended time to breed a dog (of any breed) is after it's second heat cycle, and be at least of 2 years of age. The reason being, is because that's when the dog is mature enough to be a good mother, and less likely to have complications. Just the same, you should have your dog examined by a veterinarian prior to breeding to confirm she's in excellent health, and ready to undertake the rigors of carrying a litter of pups. Any vaccinations that would be needed should be given prior to breeding.

Yorkies frequently have difficulty delivering puppies. You should talk to your vet about this, and what you might expect from a "difficult delivery" or if a cesarean is recommended for delivering the litter.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
