Advise on best small house dog.

Hello, I'm wishing to get advise on choosing a small, quiet dog for small unit with small courtyard.  Ideally, i want a dog that's quite independent as I work long hours.  Any suggestions?

cavalier king charles spaniel, pekingese, west highland white terrier, boston terrier, basenji.....

better yet, if you don't have time to walk a dog everyday and if the dog will be alone for long hours can I suggest a cat, rabbit, ferret, rat, turtle, fish, birds, guinea pigs etc. A dog left alone for long hours can become very destructive so if you value your garden and furniture I would not suggest a dog. If you are set on getting a dog, perhaps look into doggy day care in your area or find someone who lives locally who might like to have a play mate for their dog during the days. Otherwise......get a cat
