Question

BooBoo
Our 2 year old English Bulldog was house trained after about 3 or 4 months maybe a little longer, but hasn't had an accident in about a year. he has not been neutered. We leave him inside our home unsupervised and have never found any evidence of accidents.  We have a doggie door that he uses whenever he wants to go outside and this has been excellent.  He has access to the air conditioning and heat, food and water inside and outdoors for bathroom and barking or whatever.
Two weeks ago my husband and I were out of town.  My mom and dad keep him for us when we're away.  They do not have a doggie door.  They leave him in their utility room and take him out during the day fairly often.  They are home and retired.  However, mom got up the next morning and he had peed in the floor.  She told me she thought that he just couldn't hold it through the night, she had gone to bed fairly early.  The next night my dad stayed up later and let him out and he was fine the next day no accident.
About 30 minutes ago, my husband and I were talking in his home office and our bulldog just hiked his legs and peed on my husbands golf clubs that were sitting out in his office.
I can't imagine what made him do this.  Things are  in disarray out there because we had am air conditioner leak and had that fixed and an area (not near where he peed) that had to be dried out.
Anyway, our bulldog was very aggressive and snapping and growling at us when we corrected him.
We have gone back and forth about getting him neutered.  Our original plans were to get a female also.  Would this issue play into his hiking his leg and peeing?
Thanks for any advise you might have.

Answer
Hi Becky,

It might be worth taking your dog to the vet, to make sure there is not an underlying physical problem (for example, swelling, irritation, infection, blockage). It sounds like your dog is letting you know he is not happy, but when a dog does something that is really unusual (for that dog), I always think a trip to the vet is in order just to be safe.  He might be unhappy because something is wrong.

Hopefully its nothing serious - maybe something as simple as him voicing his displeasure at the disarray you mention. Dogs are creatures of habit and when things in the home are out of order, sometimes the changes frighten them. It can be something that seems trivial, like a rug in a different place, or people in the house that are not usually there. Sometimes they re-mark their territory.

If you are not planning to raise puppies, neutering him would be a good idea - it could make him a bit more docile, and is definitely the responsible thing to do with a dog you don't intend to breed. I'm guessing that's his photo in the picture- he's a real cutey. I'm guessing this peeing in the house is not something you're going to see continue, but do ask the vet to check him out.

Hope this helps!
