Apartment dog

My husband and I have moved to an apartment and would like to get a dog.  It is an average sized apartment and we both have different requirements.  His main criteria is to get a dog that will play fetch, will be comfortable in the apartment, and is very trainable and intelligent.  I would like a dog that is medium sized 30-50 lbs.  I have researched this and most results come back with miniatures which is not what I picture when I see our new family member.  We would prefer a breed with a moderate energy level as we both work during the day and an easy going temperament.  We do not currently have children but may in the near future.  Also, we do not have any other pets.  This would be a single puppy household.  Do you have any breed suggestions?

Go to www.AKC.org  and look up the following breeds   any one of them would probably be fine.

Irish Terrier
Boykin
Shetland Sheepdog
Standard Poodle
Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever
Irish water spaniel
English Cocker spaniel
Brittany Spaniel
Border Terrier
American Water spaniel  (this may be a great choice)
