will dashounds greive to death if they are seperated from each other after four years? i have two sisters that have been together since birth they were used for breeding until i got them a few days ago i just wanted to know if it would be a good idea to seperate

Answer

Hi Shannon,

Bonded dogs, no matter the breed, may be overwhelmed by stress if they are separated. This will vary in degree between individual dogs.

Since you've just got these dogs relatively recently, allow to the dogs to adjust to living with you, which may take about three weeks before they really feel at home. Once the dogs feel secure in your home, take just one of the dogs out when you do errands. You can switch out which dog you take with you, what you're doing is evaluating how the dog does emotionally when she's separated from the other dog. If possible, have a person at home with the dog you don't take out, so that she too can be evaluted.

It's possible that the dogs aren't as dependent on one another as you think, making re-homing one of the dogs a lot simpler. It's also possible that the dogs are bonded very closely, and shouldn't be separated.

You should have both of these dogs spayed. Over breeding isn't healthy for dogs, and accidents have a way of happening when female dogs aren't spayed, no matter how diligent an owner is.

Best of luck,

Patti
