Question
Hi, I have a wonderful dog she is a shetland sheepdog lab mix. Just beautiful and extremely smart. We have had her since a baby - we got her from the pound. (our pound puppy)
Problem is... she decides to take herself for a neighborhood stroll every now and then. Usually she will stay right with us in the front yard, but if she feels like we have neglected her walks she will walk to the end of the yard, turn, look at us, we will call her back and tell her no ( she knows she is being bad ) and will walk across the street and just go for a stroll. We will follow her with a leash and she will start running.. She loves car rides so if we follow her with the car she thinks it is a game and will trot infront of the car while we follow. We do not want her to get hurt so we are thinking we should install a radio fence. I have read that it doesn't hurt them only gives them a little jolt of reality.. is this true? any suggestions? Our neighbors sit outside and watch us when she does this especially when it snows because it is like a funniest home video. We end up covered in snow trying to catch her and she just loves to play with us. She is about 75 lbs but she can be a brat.. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Nichole
This is a NO NO BAD DOG!
She has got to be stopped from this NOW!  She is developing a bad behavior habit that will harm or kill her in front of your eyes one day.  Yes, it will?
With the Shetland in her for exergy and the dumb (lab)_ sorry in her to hunt and drift makes it a bad combination of.
Labs are in my book stupid till u pass that hunting block.  Shetlands need to roam and herd so they drift.
Forget the fencing know too many dogs that ran right through it only to be scared to return.  It is worthless.
Get a shock collar for training, not barking.  go to www.drsfostersmith.com and get one for 150 yards, all 3 of mine are now hanging collecting dirt.  When I started to breed the West German lines after selling my horse, I bought 3 to put on mine, in ten minutes they dare not go near the open gait to escape to the neighbor boy that called them.
When u shock her, wait, then call her to you and pity her and hug her for she does not know who did it or where it came from, only that it hurt for a few seconds when she approached the certain area u shocked her.  It is a super training tool for fast training and positive training.  Once taught u just holler HEY, STOP she will remember, it might take a few days of short sessions, but it sure taught mine right next door not to go near the fence or open gait.

Warm Regards
