Normal heart rate for a miniature Schnauzer

Question
My 2.9 year old neutered Miniature Schnauzer recently spent 2 days at the animal ER for suddenly having hyper-reactions to any stimulant and a heart rate of 38. They dx'd Toxicity. I think it's his heart, and I need to know the normal range for a healthy mini-schnauzer, as his rate now is staying in the 70's and very low 80's. He is scheduled for a cardiologist appt. 7/19/07. Please help. Sandy

Answer
Normal heart rate for a dog is 70-160, depending on its activity level, so at 70-80, your dog is within normal range, I would say. A well-conditioned dog will have a lower heart rate than one that is a couch-potato. Thirty-eight is most certainly NOT normal.
