Question
I have a catahoula hound which we took in after arriving on our property.  Since we did not know how old she was she has now come into heat before we got her spade and I am wondering how long I have to put up with visiting dogs.  She was swollen for about 1 week then began bleeding about 6 days ago - now there are male dogs showing up.  Will these male dogs be interested in her until she is totally out of heat or is there a phase of the cycle that attracts the males?  I am going nuts.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Yvonne;
Their season lasts right at three weeks, so you have a couple of weeks to go yet.
I am not aware of anything that will stop a season, or that responsible Veterinarians will spay during a season.
There was at one time a pill to stop their season, but it was causing so many deaths the FDA took it off the market.
About spaying during a season, I am not sure of. I have never had it come up with mine.
It is my understanding they will be interested right up to the last day.
The dogs will jump over or tunnel under places that should be impossible to get to a female in season. she will also d all that to get out to be with them.
The couple of times I had one in season, I boarded them at my Veterinarian's until it was safe to bring them home.
