Blood in loose stool

Question
I have a 7 month old Lab who became ill within the past 12 hours. The symptoms are a fever, no appetite and blood in a loose black stool. We believe he ate small black bird closely related to a crow. So we suspect it is food poisoning. There is no way he could have injested anything
other than the same dog food he eats regularly.
Could we be able to treat this at home if possible? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tony,

Honestly, you are describing symptoms of Parvo.  I am not trying to scare you, but I really think you should take him to a vet.  If it is parvo and they catch it soon enough, he can be saved.  But if you wait and it gets worse, the chance decreases.  I would especially be worried if the diarrhea gets worse.  Parvo dogs have BAD diarrhea and it has a very distinctive foul odor.  It could possibly be the bird he ate, there is really no way of telling.  At the very least, keep an eye on him and if he won't eat and gets weak...please take him to a vet.    See if you can get him to drink so he won't dehydrate.  If he steadily gets worse, please do not waste time getting him some professional help.  I really hope I am wrong on this....
God bless,
Becky
