missing the wee wee pad

I have a 6 month old maltese boy. I trained him to pee and poo on the pad which he did very well up until recently. He began missing the pad by a few inches. Sometimes he pees right on the edge of it. I have the wee wee pad on top of couple sheets of newspaper as my setup. I have to go through so much paper towels and spray to clean it up. He will pee once or twice on the pad and then he starts missing. Any answers?

Are these pads disposable?
The only thing I can think of is, he is peeing in different spots because it is dirty there.
I have nmever used the pee pads, always letting mine go outside.
I have a doggy door that opens into a safe, fenced yard for them.
You might try getting one of the litter boxes for dogs, and using that special litter for dogs.
Another thing, I don't know what you are using to clean up, but he may not like the smell of that, and is trying to avoid it.
I use Simple Solution to clean up after the puppies I foster.
I get it at Petsmart.
I think just about all the pet stores carry it.
