Question
Hi there.  I have a 1 1/2 year old fawn brindle bulldog, named George.  Since we've had him we've had a series of trips to the vet.  When he was about 9 months he had Demodex, which we treated him for.  Then a couple of months ago he was diagnosed with puppy strangles - pussy zits on his chin and cheek flaps.  He had been on prednisone for several months and has been off of it for about a month.  Last week I had to take him to the vet because he was pooping "pudding"!  I was told he had an intestinal parasite - coccidia(?).  They gave me antibiotics to put him on, which he is still currently on.  SO....a couple months ago, I noticed that the hair around his ears and under his armpits was getting thin.  And in the recent weeks I've noticed that his freckles on his belly and chest are A LOT more noticeable than usual.  I woke up on Sat to find the bed COVERED in hair.  Every time George shakes, he leaves a whole other dog behind, so much hair comes off.  At first, it was just patches of hair from his back, which lead me and the vet to think Demodex again.  She did a skin scraping, but it turned up nothing.  He had blood work done when he was taken in for the coccidia and his blood work was normal.  NOW, hair is coming off in tufts everywhere, especially his head.  What could this be?  I'm starting to think that its not seasonal flank alopecia anymore...could it be something else?  Please help!

Answer
What are you feeding?  He should be on a common brand of dry dog chow.  There is no other way to assure that he is getting the complete and balanced diet he needs.  Unfortunately in some cases, the expensive, premium chows aren't as good as the regular brands.

A second vet's opinion might be a good idea too.
