when to train puppy to leash

Question
We have an 8 week old female yellow lab. she is settling in well to her crate..is beginning to ring a bell to go out or go to the door. Her biting [of us] is somewhat better. she sometimes barks when we say "no"..but turning our back to her seems to make an impression. When can we expect to take her for walks with a  leash? she bits it a lot and struggles. Perhaps we should wait a week or so? Don't want to wait too long. thank you for any advise..we think she is a jewel..a challenging jewel but worth all the effort and time!

Answer
I think I clicked on the wrong thing.  If you get a request for an email, ignore it.

I start puppies on leash on the way our of the kennel with a 7 week old.  The sooner you introduce the ways of its new pack, the better.  Where you take them is very important.  The period between 6-12 weeks is a dangerous time.  One sniff where a sick dog relieved itself in the last 6 months can bring on parvo or another life threatening disease.  Fail to expose it to strangers, including men, women, children, noise, etc. and you could end up with a misfit you can't take out in public.  They also need continuing contact with other dogs, but it must be limited to ones you know are getting good care.  This link has some helpful suggestions, http://www.apdt.com/po/news/docs/Messer_Nov06.pdf

Try using a drag line, a short leash with no handle.  You can buy them, but a cheap leash with the handle cut off will work.  Let her drag it around the house while keeping a close eye on her.  When you do put her on leash, if she bites it, give her a stern ''Ah, ah, ah!''.  If getting out in front and coaxing doesn't get a puppy moving, try dropping behind it and running by in baby steps calling ''Go, go, go!'' In a happy, excited voice.

Work on other obedience too.  Use a book, she is much too young for a class.
