Question
i have a 11 moth old staffordshire bull terrier, when were inside he good to a point but when were outside he switches off, he does not listen he pulls on the lead, he is distracted by everything he sees and barks and growls at other dogs. he gets walked everyday so why does he do this? My partner said neutering will help but will it help all the bad points ive mentioned, how much does it cost? and what are the changes of it working?

Answer
Hello, Neutering a non breeding dog is always a good idea...males and male large breed left unneutered can become very dominate with there family and rarely would ever get along with another dog in the house unless of course its female and submissive. Neutering wont help everything it will stop him wanting to fight so badly with other male dogs and he likely wont be so intrested in unspayed females but it wont help pulling and growling. Get a Gentle leaded head collar for him, depending where you live they run $20-40 dollars before I got one my female labrador retreiver would pull me down the streets/anywhere she felt like going so it came to the point where I wouldnt walk her and my vet saw her pulling me in teh office during her visit and reccomended one...it worked great from pulling mashine to calm walking dog in matter of minutes it does take a few days to get the dog used to it on its nose thou so it doenst paw it off. Keep a collar of harrness on the dog also at the same time in the event of the head collar coming loose or seeing another dog or cat whatever and your dog starts twisting trying to get away from you you can grab the collar or harrness also which will pervent the dog getting away or lunging at passing people or dogs, My lab goes nuts when she sees another dog during a walk...only if I have my two small terreirs with me also...if shes alone she could care less and I think shes scared of the dogs lol, but i think she thinks that when I have the little terreirs with us that she sees a dog its just being walked or if its barking or seeing one through a fence that its trying to hurt her little buddies and she goes nuts I then wind her lesh p and place my hand under her collar she ends up being reared up because she is trying to pull away the same time....technicly shes not dog agressiv eshe lives with two other dog aggresive dogs and is fine with my sisters little toy dogs and all my little neices. Is your dog aggressive to other dogs in different situations? like a petshop/vets office meeting with freinds dogs? I know pit bull or pit bull terriers can be very very dog agressive which is how they get there bad name but personly I like them and would love to have one but not with the current dogs I have...so maybe in 20 years. If your dog is dog agressive with any other dogs anywhere you cant help his little probelm thou with the head collar combined with another collar or harrness you should do ok, a harness gives you alot of control over a dog but it is helping the dog to pull its very simaler to teh ahrrnesses used for weight pull and dog sled racing my lab had one once it had everything ten times wrose and was returned and I got the head collar. Price for neuter deoends on where you live in canada for a large breed male you'd be lookig at around 130-150 in the us it would be slightly cheaper and I'm not too sure about anywhere else, best of luck with your pup and happy holidays.
