How to raise an inside/outside dog?

Question
We've just recently come into possession of a 12-week old bassett hound. Both my wife and I work full-time jobs but want the dog to sleep inside at night. We want to keep him outside during the day, but, being a hound, he likes to bark and howl. Is there any specific way to get him adjusted to staying outside during the day? He has already developed a bond with both of us and doesn't even like being alone without barking. What's the best way to train him to stay outside during the day?

Answer
Hi Troy;
That's hard to do when you are not there to correct and train when he does the howling.
By the way,,,,,,, if you are going to have a hound, learn to say it like it is.
They don't howl, The BAY.
That is what it is called, and any self respecting hound owner must know that.LOL
I had a little Beagle, and she could get out of the house, when I would walk up to the supermarket in our shopping center in our neighborhood, and she would track me down, step on the "IN" door, and wjen it popped open, she could come in, shove her nose to the floor and sniff till she caught my scent, BAy, and streak down the aisle baying.
Think YOU know what embarrassment feels like?? LOL
He is lonely and that is why he kicks up a ruckus.
Is there someone who could come over during the day and spend some time with him? Play with him, feed him and water him? Maybe a teenager or responsible pre-teen in the neighborhood.
Sorry I can't be more help, but you could take him to clases at Man's Best Friend, and maybe they can help you.
I have dealt with the problem, but I stayed home all day until I got the dog trained, and it was to stop them barking in the house. It was not outside in the daytime.
Leaving them outside is risky.
You would be surprised how many dogs are stolen over a back fence, and how many fence locks are cut to come in and get them. Also summer is near, and the heat will really make him ill if you live where the temps get in the upper 90s or over, he could have a heat stroke.
Even if you provide shade for him, lots of outside dogs are treated for heat stroke every summer.
I really wouldn't leave him outside all day, especially as young as he is.
