Female in heat, male depressed

Question
Hi, my female dog has been in heat for the past two weeks. I saperated them the first day she started because its her second cycle and I want to breed her next cycle. The male is at home with me and the female at a friend of mine. Well, the male is not eating, very selective with his food and still doesn't finish it all. He's active and playful when I play with him or the kids, other than that he's just sitting there. Please, advice me on what to do. Thanks

Answer
Nihal,  This obviously didn't go through the other day when I wrote to you.
I breed dogs, too.  He will be depressed until she is out of heat.  Has he started to howl yet?
My males howl the whole time my females are in season.  They also lose about 5 pounds, which is a lot considering the fact they are only 22 lbs to begin with.

Next time, send the male away, he still is smelling her there and it is upsetting him.   Give him some good protein like chicken and/or beef to supplement what he is not eating.  Give him some treats and just hang in there.  He will return to normal when she comes home and out of heat.

When you do breed them, make sure you only breed on the eleventh and thirteenth days of her heat cycle.  This protects the pups from being premature or overdue and zero's in on whelping dates.
