5 yr old schnauzer

Question
I have a female 5 year old schnauzer who is in excellent health.  However, when I picked her up at the groomers on Friday she informed me that she noticed the tooth behind her canine was loose.  It does not seem to bother her and she is eating and acting normal.  I can touch the tooth and it moves a little, but she doesn't even complain when I touch it.  I have never had this problem before, so I was wondering if I should watch it or take her immediately to our vet?
Thank you!

Answer
Schnauzers are very prone to tooth and gum problems, and your vet would most likely want to clean her teeth and pull that loose tooth.

Lift up her lip and look at those teeth, particularly the ones in the back. If they have *ANY* plaque buildup (discoloration) on them at all, they should be cleaned. After they are cleaned, you should start brushing them daily; they make a flavored doggy toothpaste that tastes good to the dogs (never use people toothpaste). This is very important for her oral health.
