Lactating dog that poops a lot

Question
My mini doxy just had puppies 2 weeks ago.  Here the last 3 days, we have been finding a lot of poop around the house.  She is housetrained, and we let her outside when we see her go to the door.  Since she is nursing her puppies, we give her free access to food, so my question is should we limit her amount of food?  Does the pooping have to do with her eating and nursing all the time?

Answer
Hi Suzanne,

You need to continue to give your dog access to as much food and water as she wants it, while she's nursing. She need the additional nutrition at this time.

Not every dog will have house training accidents when nursing a littler.  But because she's eating more these days, maybe don't wait for her to ask to be let outside. Take her out between 1-3 hours after eating. If you continue to see accidents in your home, shorten the amount of time you're waiting before letting her outside.

If this continues, have your dog examined by your veterinarian. Because Daschunds are prone to develop back problems, there is the possibility that giving birth somehow injured her back, and weak muscles are the reason for the problem.

I hope that helps.
Best of luck,

Patti
