Question
Hello my pug orlo is about eight months old, when i got him i realized there was two pick small sores right under his mouth. I noticed that there are more of them now under his mouth and I am not sure what they are or where he is getting them from. Could you please guide me in the right direction for a diagnosis and treatment.

Thank you

Dinesha

Answer
Dinesha,

Welcome to being a pug parent! I have 3 myself!  If by under the mouth you mean in the chin area, a common thing that puppies get is called puppy pyoderma, or acne!  If the bumps are red and like a zit, that's most likely what it is.  They generally clear up on their own, but I do suggest you go see your vet to make sure that's what's going on. Your vet can give you a face wash to use in addition to medication if needed.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the breed,  but keeping the face and wrinkles clean is very important and should be done daily.  On my pugs I use scent-free, alcohol-free baby wipes.  I buy them in bulk at costco!  Just wrap the wipe around you finger and wipe out the nose wrinkle.  Some pugs also have wrinkles on their foreheads, if this is case for Orlo, wipe those well too.

Some pugs get infections in the wrinkles due to moisture build up, there is a product called Malaseb Pledgets which were made specifically for the brachycephalic (squished faced) breeds.  They are small wipes, much like stridex pads which have a medicated solution which helps keeps down the inflammation and aids in healing.  Unless your pug has problems, the baby wipes should do just fine!

Again, go have the vet take a look to make sure it isn't something different.

Have a great weekend, give Orlo a hug from Misha, Lily and Maximus!
