Worms in 8 weeks old puppy.

Question
Hi Karen!  I have a puppy that will be 9 weeks old tomorrow.  Apparently she has never been wormed before in her life.  We got her just a week ago and this morning she came in the house and was pooping and vommitting LOTS of worms.  I gave her 2 different kinds of  over-the-counter worming medicine for hookworms, roundworms, tape worms, etc. and I was just wondering how long it took for these medicines to work and get the worms out of her system.  She loves being in the house but I'm trying to keep her away from my children that are 2 and 4 in fear that they will get worms as well.  Any advice would be appreciated!!!

Answer
Has she had a wellness exam with your vet since you brought her home? She should have also had a stool examination for parasites at that same time, which is important to verify just what you need to worm for. Different products work better on some parasites that others.

Worming needs to be done at least three times over a period of several weeks to insure that they are totally eliminated. Some worms, such as whipworms, can be very difficult to eliminate, and you must be careful that she is not reinfesting herself. Clean up all stools immediately.
