Question

Bailey and Cocoa
Hi I'm Ashley Sommer. I am ten years old, and a dog lover. I really want to enter a dog in the AKC when I'm older, but I do not know how. I might enter a female beagle of mine named Bailey, if I can train her well. Thanks!
Ashley S.

Answer
Hi Ashley,

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question.

In order to register Bailey with the American Kennel Club, her mother and father must have been registered with the AKC before Bailey was born, and a registration certificate would have been issued for the litter with Bailey was part of.  If Bailey's parent's were not registered with the AKC, you can't register her now or ever, and you can't show her in any AKC dog shows.

If you'd like to register Bailey with the AKC,  you should get an individual dog registration application from the person you bought Bailey from, or from the AKC. Once the application has been completed, you should submit it to the AKC with the proper fee. It can take several months to get your AKC registration certificate in the mail.
You can read about registering your dog with the AKC here:

http://www.akc.org/reg/registeradog.cfm

If your question is that you'd like to enter Bailey in an AKC dog show, you would need to first register her with the AKC (see above). Once you have your AKC papers, you'd need to contact the AKC Beagle Club in your area, to see their schedule of upcoming dog shows. You can find a local Beagle Club by doing a google search for the name of your state, plus the words AKC Beagle Club (example: New Jersey AKC Beagle Club).

Unfortunately, many purebred dogs with AKC papers are not "show quality" dogs. This has nothing to do with how well a dog is, or isn't trained, it has to do with a dog meeting the exact standards which the AKC has set for each breed of dog. Not every purebred dog will meet these standards. You can read the AKC breed standards for the Beagle breed here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/beagle/index.cfm

If Bailey doesn't meet the AKC breed standards set for Beagles, it doesn't mean that she isn't a wonderful dog! Happily, if you'd like to show her in a dog show, you have other options:

American Mixed Breed Obedience Registry (AMBOR), also requires all dogs registered with them to be spayed or neutered. It allows not only mixed breeds to compete at its events, but also purebred dogs who cannot be registered with purebreds for whatever reason.
http://www.ambor.us

North American Mixed Breed Registry (NAMBR) gives rescued dogs or any dogs who do not have AKC papers a chance to compete and pursue titles.
http://www.nambr.ca

Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America (MBDCA), stresses obedience and companionship and requires all dogs registered to be spayed or neutered. Their conformation competition, obviously, cannot judge mixed breeds against breed standards but, in the interest of responsible ownership, they evaluate physical soundness, good health, and personality. Dogs registered with MBDCA can earn championships and titles.

If you'd like to register your dog with one of these dog groups, just contact the organization listed above and ask for an application, fee schedule, and more details. To get involved in competition, you will want to attend some of their events first to get a feel for it, before actually enrolling in a show. You can also contact your veterinarian for names of local kennel clubs or obedience clubs. These clubs are filled with dog lovers who will probably be quite happy to give you direction in training.

Best of luck!
