Question
One of my labs has had 9 puppies that are now 1 month old. They have started eating solid food and mother is feeding them less and less. However, Daisy, the grandmother lab loves to be with them and today she lay down and had them all sucking! She looked so happy I let her carry on. Is this common? Daisy is 11 but has a strong maternal streak.

Answer
Yes this is common-not only is it a strong instinct,it's a strong emotion as well, animals do hold strong bond with babies, even if it's not there own,and they may become as protective as the real mom,in the wild wolves have 'baby sitters' while the rest of the pack takes off to hunt for food the 'baby sitter' stays behind with the pups

This is esp common in females that have had puppies before-it is amazing and cute to watch though :)
