Calmest and Friendliest Breed

Question
I would like a calm and friendly dog. Can you recommend a breed that fits that description. I have two children, a toddler and a preschooler. We have a house with a decent sized yard but we want an "inside" dog. Minimal shedding would be preferred. We are active and would like to take our dog on driving vacations although we do not travel very often. I would love a running companion that is good on a leash and not at all aggressive. Any suggestions?

I love Standard Poodles for children,or a true miniature, not an oversized toy is also a great choice. Find a good breeder to get a calm, healthy dog and do not choose the alpha pup in the litter, choose the middle of the road pup that is inquisitive, friendly but doesn't chase your shoe laces or climb all over  you, don't get the puppy that cringes away either,
They are SMART, friendly, non shedding, easily trained (doesn't always go along with smart) great with children, very althletic being retrievers , love water, playing fetch and any other game, or just watching tv. Have endless patience with children. Grooming is not an issue if you keep them in a kennel cut. You can have it done every few months, They do not have a doggy odor and are one of the nicest breeds I ever worked with.
True minis are hard to find, small standards are usually pretty easy to find.
Those two are my very top choices.
Most non shedding breeds are terriers and not necessarily great choices for children. If I have to choose a terrier it would be a west highland white.
