Question
I was away on vacation and let my 18 year old daughter baby sit my 3 year old male yorkie and my 9 month old female yorkie. I returned this morning and she had advise me that will I was gone my female had went into heat. She said that they had mated. I didn't want my yorkie to breed until she was 2 years old, now she might be pregant. I feel she is to young to have been breed. I will be taking her to the vet to see if she is going to be able to carry these puppies if in fact she is pregant. Can you tell me if a puppy that is 9 months old is uncommon for them to have a litter?

Answer
Tammy,
Most of the time young dogs have an easier time having the pups, but she may really have some "after" affects, like losing her hair, etc.   You dont have much choice at this point so make sure she is getting a vitamin and mineral supplement and watch her carefully after she has them for elampsia,  which is a lack of calcium while nursing.  Ask you vet about the signs so he can advise you.  Also, switch to puppy food, it will make it easier on the pups as well as giving her some extra nutrition.
