Question
my american bulldog chews on end of his tail and makes it bleed, also he chews on his upper hind legs and paws a lot?

Answer
Some dogs do that, and it is poorly understood.  In some cases it can be traced to itching form an allergy.  have you talked to the vet about it.

Other cases more likely are boredom.  How does he spend his day, at home by himself?  Crated, lose in the house, outside in a kennel, or a fenced yard are all the same, unnaturally by him self.  You might be able to help it by more quality time with him when you can, obedience training, agility competition, flyball, fetch until your arm falls off, a 3 hour walk every night, or whatever.  Another good solution may be doggy day care.  He will be to busy enjoying supervised play with other dogs to chew on himself.  At the end of the day, he will still look forward to going home with his special person.
