Question
I have a 9 month old beagle pitbull terrier her level for lyme is 305 is taking
doxycycline on and off becuz it can affect her stomach she has trouble
walking, eating, and has diareah. my question is is there anything I can give
her in between the doxycycline to keep her more comfortable.  I'm sure I'm
getting the right treatment just want your opinion if I should contact a new
vet.

Answer
Hi Cindy,

Your dog requires a prescription antibiotic.

Dogs are like people, sometimes they just don't tolerate a particular medication, it doesn't mean your vet is at fault.

If the doxycycline wasn't well tolerated speak to your vet, and get a prescription for another medication. It can help to give your dog the medication with food, so it will less likely to upset her stomach. Diarrhea is a common side effect of antibiotics in general. You may have to put up with this during the treatment period, try adding some cooked white rice to your dog's meals, to "firm up" her bowel movements.

Best of luck,

Patti
