Question
I am planning on getting a male and female Rat Terrier puppies and have them breed when they are older. I haven't got them yet but I am wondering how long should I wait to get the second puppy or if it will be okay to get them at the same time. What is the minimum age for a Rat Terrier to be breed also.

Thanks,
Ashley

Answer
Ashley-

I'm sorry, I thought I answered this but it must not have posted.

A dog will go into heat the first time between 6-12 months of age. HOWEVER no ethical breeder will breed before the dogs are at LEAST 2 years old. Breeding before hand means breeding dogs whos bones have not solidified and who may not be mature enough to succesfully whelp the litter. Also, most genetic testing that is REQUIRED in breeding can not be done until the dog is at least 2, such as OFA.

You could get them at the same time, however not siblings, and remember to keep them seperate when she goes into heat.
