Familly is getting a dog, shedding........

Question
My family has a minor dog fur allergy, but doesn't like any of the toy dogs (don't shed). The family is more into medium sized dogs like the Aussies, sheties, and border collies. All of them shed like volcanos, and cleaning won't be too hard but it's the allergies that makes a problem. We want more of a doglike feature, not small like the shih tzu or poodles. If you know several medium breeds that don't shed much, please reply.
Thank you!
Heather

Answer
No problem.  It usually isn't the hair, but the skin dander.  You want a big dog, how about a standard Poodle?  I have done a blindfold walk with one as my guide.  You can also look at Airedales and Schnauzers.  I am no big fan of breed selectors, but the ones at www.akc.org and www.purina.com may turn up other choices.  Dog don't read breed descriptions and often a puppy fails to turn out as expected.  However, you can usually count on their size and type of coat.

You maybe able to work with a breed rescue group to take one of their dogs on a trial basis.  These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home
to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them.  You may
find a rescue near you starting at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.

A Poodle rescue should have Poodles of all sizes.
