Sudden Black Tarry Stool in my 11 yr old dog

Question
On Thur took the dog to ER for ear infection, shot of ventalog and pencillin, home with clomavox 250 mg. on Friday the dog started to pass black tarry stools.  Took him back to ER on sunday because didn't want to eat or drink and thought he wasn't doing good on clomavox, after 800.00 dollars of test, no coagulation problem, no know mas or lung problems, no rat poison. I kept asking if the stool could be from the meds., he's eating and drinking, he is tired today because of five hours at the Vets, but today the stools are still dark, not as black, but still very dark. Could it be the meds.

Answer
Hi Carleen,

I am so sorry that your dog is going through so much.  It must be so stressful for you.

You question is very technical and I can't give you a medical response.  I do think from what I know that black tarry stools might indicate internal bleeding.

I do think that the problem could be the meds.  Why don't you call the drug company and ask for their pharmacist.

Before you do that, call a regular pharmacy and ask them if a possible side effect of the meds (don't say it's for a dog) could be black tarry stools and if so, what to do about it.  When it comes to medications, they are usually the best resource for information.

Sometimes we have to be our own medical detective!

Good luck and I do hope that your precious dog recovers quickly.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
