Two puppies or one?

Question
Hi, Emily. My wife and I plan to get 2 King Charles Cavalier Spaniels now that we're retired and can give them lots of attention. We have no other pets. What are the pluses and minuses of getting both puppies at the same time or getting one and waiting a while? If we go the 2nd route, how long should we wait before getting puppy #2?

Thanks,
Steve and Kerry

Answer
If you've raised a puppy before you will realize how much work that can be. Times that by two then add a little mischief on. Many people can do fine as long as they know what they are getting into. House training two puppies can be either harder or easier depending on your experience and how you intend to do it. If they are to be litter or paper trained for their life then it might be easier. I say this beuase if one dog is getting the hang of it really easily and you praise this dog for a good job in front of the other, will lets just say monkey see monkey do. If you get a pup then wait till it is behaved and has very reasonable manners, and then get a second, the second pup might learn everything faster. There are advantages and disadvantages to both routes. Personally what I would do is get one pup, wait till it was trained and I knew what I was doing, then get a second. And if you get a female first she will probably mother the new pup as I have heard that cavaliers are very maternal. Thats what I would do. I hope I have helped you in your desicion a little bit. Let me know what you decide. I would like to hear what happens. Sending lots of happy tail wags your way. Good luck.
