Lump on my 1 year old Labradors neck

Question
Hi,

My 1 year old Labrador recently (overnight..it sounds strange, but this dog is my baby and I would notice something like this) developed a golf ball sized lump on his neck just below his jawbone.  Its not really hard, but its not soft like I would imagine a cyst or abscess  to feel like.  I am unable to get him into the Vet until friday (its Sunday now) and my mind is just going crazy fearing he has cancer or something horrible.  I guess it also is a good thing to note that he isn't acting any differently than he normally does.  He still loves playing, he has a very healthy appetite, and he doesn't have any vomiting or diarrhea.

Answer
Hi Brandon,

I completely understand your concern!

First, try to keep calm, most growths a dog can develop are not cancerous. Given the location, it's possible that your dog has a salivary gland cyst, tooth abscesses, enlarged lymph nodes or other infections of the mouth. Treatments will vary depending on what the diagnosis is.

It's really good your dog isn't showing signs of pain, is eating fine, and is acting normally.

I don't think your dog will suffer an ill effects by not being seen by your vet until Friday, however many vet offices have cancellations during the week. If you call the office and ask to be called if there are any cancellations, you may be able to be seen before Friday.

Best of luck... and try not to worry!
