shihpoo puppy

we had puppy for weekend to see if we wanted.  when he lays down at night to sleep ususally after 30 min. he starts hacking like he is got something in his throat, and then acts like he is going to throw up, but nothing ever comes up, and he does this all night, but never during the day, just when he lays down at night, and he doesn't act sick.  sometimes he starts panting before he does this.  is this normal for a shihpoo.

That's not normal for a dog of any breed, Shelia, although it could be that he is having trouble breathing due to a problem with his nasal cavity. Shih-tsu dogs have a 'scrunched in' face, which can interfere with their breathing sometimes. However, usually they have trouble at times other than when they are sleeping.

If it were me, I'd talk to the shelter or rescue group that I got him from, and see what they think. If you want to keep him, you may want to take him to a vet and have him thoroughly checked out first.
