canine anal glands

please tell me why it is necessary to express canine anal glands?  We have a six yo, 65# male dalamtian . . .thanks!

It should only be done if the dog has problems,otherwise over doing can cause the glands to become so weak that the only way of emptying them is for you or a vet to do them

When they become impacted(full without emptying on there own)they can become infected
