large dog drool

Question
I am planning on getting a large dog (for instance,Great Dane,Newfie) a big sweetheart, from a shelter or rescue group. The only downside I am having a hard time coming to grips with is the amount of drool they produce. I read from this site that the American Mastiff has a relatively dry mouth. My husband won't agree to a dog that big. Do you know of other big dogs that don't slobber too much?
Thanks, Leslie

Answer
You might try something like a Giant Schnauzer or Doberman Pinscher, but the problem is that most of these larger dogs were bred for specific things and require a dog-knowledgeable owner/handler. If that is not you (and your family), then you should look for something smaller and more manageable. A greyhound is a large (tall) dog that you might consider, although it would need a fenced yard. They are very sweet, and many end up in rescue after they are retired from the race track.

Remember, most rescue dogs end up in rescue for a reason, and many come with "baggage" that the new owner needs to help them work through. Those really large breeds also have shorter life spans, usually living only 8-10 years at the most.
