Answer
Hi Dawn;
Could be just plain old green eyed monster, jealousy.
With the new baby, he may be a little afraid he is being replaced, OR, he could see this new pup as a threat to his territory, so he is marking it.
when we treat them like members of the family, they see themselves that way. New children in the family are just new pups in the pack.
He is telling this new kid," I was here first, so you stay in the proper pecking order. This is MY territory".
Make him feel he is still in the same position he was before.
Naturally, this new grandbaby is specisl, and as a Granny, ( am one myself), you can't keep your hands or eyes off that grandbaby. That is natural, but he can see it as, "I am not her baby anymore".
Let him SHARE the baby.
Let him know it is HIS baby too, and he is still the big cheese he always was.
That will bring him colser to the baby, and he will become protective of it, and they will be close.
Treat him the same way you would treat a big brother of the baby, that had tio be reassured too.
It is really the same thing.
To erase the smell of the places he has been, so he can no longer detect an odor, I use Simple Solution.
It smells great, and removes pet stains and odors.
After you scrub up after him, so you can not smell even a hint of an odor, HE can still smell it, and will go in that place again.
I suspect it is marking his territory that he is doing.
Take him to where he has marked, point to it and shame and scold the dickens out of him.
Brag twice as much on him when he goes outside.
Bring him into the attention of the baby. Include him like you would include another child.
Say things like, "Let's go see OUR baby".
Let him feel it is his too, and he will be that child's protector and best friend.
God luck, and congratulations on the new grandbaby.
