treating parasites in llamas

Question
What is used to treat llamas for GI parasites, and is it dosed by weight?  I read that medications used for sheep, goats, and horses are safe for llamas, but the labelling leaves dosing a mystery. Hopefully an injectable anti-parasite medication is available since oral dosing would be a new rodeo event. (One llama recently had an autopsy which showed she had significant parasites, even though that was not the cause of death.  So, i need to treat the rest of the herd.)

Answer
Yes the parasiticides (dewormers) are dosed by weight. I do believe that sheep/goat wormers are safe for llamas, your vet should be able to tell you the correct dosage. Also it is best to know what types of intestinal worms you are treating. From the autopsy (called necropsy in animals) you should be able to find out what parasites are present (also you can take a fecal (poop) sample in to your vet to have it tested and find out what parasites are present). I would suggest using an oral dewormer (by mouth) it is safer and you can give a little more than the correct dosage without any problems. Injectible dewormers are available but you would need to talk with you vet about getting the right one for llamas. I would suggest strongid T dewormer, it will kill most parasites, except for whip worms. You can usually find this at pet stores or your vet can sell you some. It is an oral medication. Also injectable ivermectin may be a good choice just be sure to talk with your vet about the correct dosage (I am sorry but I don't know the dosage for llamas or I would tell you). Also, for cattle there are feed blocks full of dewormer that may be able to be used for llamas it is called safe guard block dewormer and can be picked up at farmers co-op's or farm feed/supply stores (the people at the stores should be able to tell you if it is safe for llamas and if they can't they should be able to call the companies that make the product and find out for you). These block dewormers are put in the pasture with the animal, the animals eat them and get dewormed by eating the medicine in them. I hope this helps and good luck!
