Choice of puppy

QUESTION: Dear Nancy, I am planning to buy either a Maltese or a Shih Tzu puppy, and am confused with making the right choice. Which would be a better choice in terms of trainability, companionship and health issues ?

ANSWER: Jog,
No contest here,,,the Maltese is by far the best for health and companionship and trainability.  The biggest drawback is the hair which needs constant attention or it looks great in about a 2 inch puppy/teddy bear cut (one length all over with a round face)
The shih tzu has eye problems (very expensive), breathing problems, skin problems,, and it goes on and on.  They either have a wonderful temperament or a bad one.  They tend to be independent also so training is harder.

QUESTION: Dear Nancy, Thanks a LOT for what you suggested. I have decided to go for a Maltese. What is better a male or a female, and is it ok to take a 8-12 week old pup ?

ANSWER: either is good, but the females are usually quieter.  the boys more boisterous

QUESTION: Thanks again Nancy.. I was wondering, if I take a Maltese pup, would I face a lot of problem on Tear Stains on the dogs face as I have read its a very common problem with the Maltese, just like Renal Failure seems to be a common problem with the Shih Tzu..

Tear stains are better than renal failure for sure..However there is a new product out called  Angel Eyes that you put in the food and works very well....It can be gotten online when you are ready,,,  Also,  if you wipe the eyes frequently that helps too.
