Question
I have a 8 month old husky pup. I am at work a lot and see a difference in him. His behavior has changed for the worse and I have done some research. Many articles suggest he shouldn't be alone. I am looking into getting a fiend for him but want to make sure a pick a breed that will match up with him.

Answer
Hello,

You're right, if he gets along well with other dogs a companion might be a good thing to consider. The most important factor in selecting a friend for your dog is how well they get along and how well the new dog will fit into you're home situation. For example, if you get a dog that is needy you may compound your problem because your schedule already makes it difficult to give as much attention to the first dog. I would recommend an adult dog, one that has a history of being calm and past it's "puppy" behaviors. You're best bet would be to call around to a few local pet shelters and tell them about your situation, chances are they will match you with an appropriate friend for your husky. I would also ask to let the dogs meet and play before taking the dog home, just to make sure they get along well. The only time breed really becomes an issue is more in reference to size and energy level, and there's a good chance that a mixed breed dog may make a good playmate for your dog. Look for a dog that is around his same size and at or a moderately below his energy level. Avoid dogs that are extremely high strung or dogs that won't play at all. From the dogs you narrow down, if he is allowed to play with each of them first then you can determine which one to take based on which one he interacts with best. Good luck!
