old dog with wound near its anus

Question
My 15 year old mongrel's hind legs are starting to give out and now she has a wound near her anus from dragging herself across the floor most of the time. She can walk when she is "upright", but she can't stand by herself when she's in a prone position. I have been treating her wounds for about a week now and just when it's starting to look better, she goes and drags herself across the floor again. how can i keep her off the wounded area? it's getting bigger...

Answer
Hi Tanya,

Has you dog been examined by your vet? There are new medications available which may help restore some of your dog's mobility, and also relieve her pain, which she undoubtedly has.
Your vet should also examine this wound, as you say it's  getting larger.

I think it would be best to treat your dog's mobility issues, instead of only treating the sore. The sore is a symptom of the problem, after all.  The wound is bound to return even if it heals up, since the irritation will continue.

The "Bottom's Up Harness"  is considered the most effective device of it's kind. This harness resembles a leash with a leg loop on either side. Instead of attaching it around your pet's neck, you gently slide the loops around the rear legs, and pull the harness up over the hips. As your dog begins to walk, simply pull straight up on the leash to add as little or as much support as your dog needs to walk comfortably.
You could also make a sling to help your dog get into the standing position. Here are instructions:

There are also pet carts, or "wheel chairs" available which go a long way in returning mobility, which would also prevent her from dragging herself. You can read more about dog carts here:

It might help to use a Liquid Bandage Spray on your dog's sore. There are a few brands made especially for dogs that won't sting when applied. They offer breathable protective layer that keeps out debris, dirt and germs. I'm afraid that it would get rubbed off as your dog drags herself along.

Feel free to get back to me if I can be of further help.

Best of luck,
Patti
