my rescued dog, very skiddish

Question
I recently rescued a black lab/boxer mix who is believed to be about a year old. Hes a neutered male. He has been in the shelter that I rescued him from since July 7, so nearly half of his life, he has been for the most part caged up. He is extremely skiddish. After only a few hours with me, he was most comfortable and will follow me around, but really likes to hideout in my bed, which is in the lower level of the house and apart from everything else. Hes like a different dog when its just me, and hes hidden away in my room. I literally have to carry him up the stairs for him to come and he will hide under the table on  my foot while him eating or lay on the couch without moving. What is the best way to help him make the adjustment to the house and to me and my roommate. I don't want to force him too soon or make him more scared, but I don't want him to get used to and only be comfortable hiding away by himself in the basement. Advice would be great! Thanks.

Answer
Probably the best thing to do for a while is to just give him time, most of the time they adjust on there own

However, what you can do is either attach a leash to your belt(or hold it) so he just is forced to go where you go or try giving him little treats in order to get him to explore more
