Question
You see, we just got this dog (6 months old) and were afraid that she'll never be able to not be afraid of us/ humans. She hates humans and tries to run and hide whenever were around. Is she to old that she'll never learn to like us? Or is it just that shes still afraid of the memory of the people that toke care of her when she was in the kenel? It's kind of funny how are first dog LOVES humans but HATES dogs so we thought we'd socialize with a new dog. The outcome of that is just... Or first dog hates this dog but loves us, and this dog loves our firsts dog but hates us.If this makes any sense PLEASE help us!What do we do?

Answer
I have not actually read the noted behaviorists Fuller and Scott or Pfaffenburger, but have read quotes from their work in dozens books including the Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of new Skete. ''...pups raised without human contact would show fearful reactions to humans at five weeks of age but could readjust over 2 weeks time if handled often, Puppies first exposed to human contact at twelve weeks of age, however immediately reacted very fearfully and fled from the experimenters. They acted essentially like wild animals and were socially irretrievable. They had missed the vital contact during the critical period.'' p 43, First Edition.

Your new dog may not be as bad as the above suggests, but I am afraid good socialization is the exception, not the rule.  Give it time, as much affection as it will tolerate, treats, etc.  Let it see the other dog enjoying you love on it.

It is possible a good private trainer or dog behaviorist may have some tricks I don't know.  Be careful.  Some of them still rely on the harsh methods left from the 50's.  They could make the problem worse.
