Question
Hi Patti,
I had my two 3yr old golden retrievers neutered a few days
ago. One of the dogs has a very sore looking scrotum which is extremely sensitive to touch. I started him on amoxillin as echinacea didn't work. Please advise if this is normal? Any other alternative medicine that I can use?

Answer
Hi Smeeta,

Even though Echinacea is thought by some to help speed wound healing and reduce inflammation, there are much better medications whose use go beyond speculation and myth, that will also work quickly and safely to relieve the problem. You say: "I started him on amoxillin", is that a medication your vet prescribed? If it isn't, you shouldn't be using it.

What you need to do, is contact your vet, and tell him or her your dog's post surgery condition. At that point, your dog may need a return visit to the clinic, or have his medication adjusted.

An infected surgical site is not something you want to self medicate, things can get very ugly, and very painful very fast. Don't play games with your dog's health.

Best of luck,
Patti
