ANSWER:
Hi Ginny,

I hope you like puppies, because that's in your future! A dog's heat cycle lasts 21 days on average, and you can generally expect this to happen twice a year. You can't blame Milo, he's acting like a normal healthy un-neutered male dog. They all act this way when there's a female dog in heat, there's no training him out of it.

The real pity here, is that a female dog gains some pretty significant health benefits when they're spayed before the onset of it's first heat cycle. Even if you wanted to breed Layla, that shouldn't have been done before two years of age. Like humans, dogs are better parents if they have their first litter when fully grown, and mature.

I suggest you not wait until Layla begins to show signs of pregnancy, and have her spayed now.

Best of luck,

Patti

QUESTION: Hi Patti and Thank You for your quick reponse i really appreciated. But thats the thing i really don't know if she is pregant. And i don't have the money to get none of them fixed right now. How long will Milo keep acting this way do you know. Right now she is over her menstrual, i guess what i am asking will he stay this way for ever or would it evenly stop.

Answer

Hi Ginny,

There's a very high likelihood that your female dog has been impregnated if your male dog has mated with her more than once. Like I said, you shouldn't wait to find out if she's pregnant or not, you should have your dog spayed without delay. This is part of the responsibility of owning a female dog.

Like I said before, the average female dog's heat lasts three to four weeks, twice a year. You can expect your male dog (and any male dog that lives within a half mile radius of your home) to be insane during this time period. You should do some reading on a dog's heat cycle to familiarize yourself. Many inexperienced dog owners equate this bloody discharge phase with the entire cycle.  They mistakenly assume that once the bleeding stops the cycle is over and it's safe to let the dogs return to their normal living arrangements. That's wrong, it's the time when the female is becoming receptive and fertile, so this is the best time to get pregnant.

There are many reduced cost, and even free spay programs, contact your local animal shelter or Humane Association to see where you can find one of these clinics in your area. You might find where in your state or city low cost spay services are, by doing a google search for your state along with phase "low cost spay".

Best of luck,
Patti
