Question
I own a Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch. She is eight years old and never had puppies. When it somes to feeding her she always takes the bowl in her mouth and shifts it around while rubbing her nose against the floor as if she wants to cover it even though she is hungry. Can you please advise why she does this? Cannot understand her behaviour. It gets messy sometimes as well. thanks

Answer
Hi Bernadette,

Your dog's food bowl behavior might have gotten started out of the excitement of mealtime, and now it's simply a habit for her. You'll probably never know the exact reason why your dog moves her food bowl around. Dogs can acquire some pretty odd habits, and once a behavior is a habit it can be hard to stop them from doing it.

Luckily, this particular habit is pretty begin, and causes no harm to anybody, including herself. If it's really bothering you and it makes too much of a mess, you can try getting a food bowl with a non-slip rubberized bottom. You could also try using an elevated food bowl stand, like one of these:

Best of luck,
