boxer pup biting

Question
QUESTION: I just got a boxer pup she is two months old and really friendly with people but when i try pat her on her head she tries to bite me and growls while she is biting me i don't know if she is being aggressive or just playing rough i would like to put an end to this biting before she gets older and stronger.

ANSWER: What I do with puppy biting is to pinch the puppy's lip HARD as I stare it in the eye and roar in its face (like a lion). Sometimes I will hold it up in the air by the scruff of its neck as I stare and roar. The average puppy catches on to this quickly, but many will need a reminder a few weeks later.

Start practicing "Nothing in Life is Free", and continue this through the dog's lifetime. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm  Also, get her into obedience classes and work with her every single day.

The puppy needs to learn that YOU are the boss, and she is NOT.

QUESTION: Ive tried the technique you told me by holding it in the air and stare and roar but when i put him down he growls again and tries to bite me

Answer
I thought you said he/she (which is it?) was growling and then running away? You never said the puppy was biting. You may well have a puppy that is too dominant for you, and the best solution might be to return that puppy to its breeder and look for a more submissive one that would better suit your personality.

As I said yesterday, another thing I recommend for dominant puppies... "the long down", done usually at least once a week, but in the more dominant dogs at least three times a week. Scroll down to the article, "Training the Natural Way". http://web.archive.org/web/20071022223519/http://volhard.com/general/artbywv.htm  Pick a time when the puppy is a bit more tired, and sit on the floor in front of the TV or something so that YOU can make it through the 30 minutes, and do this when there should be no interruptions. Do not let the puppy get up, particularly if it is still struggling when the time is up, but wait until the puppy is quiet. If the puppy falls asleep, wake it up when the time is over and give it a release word. If your puppy fights this exercise, you may have to keep your hand on its chest the first few times you do it.

If you choose to keep this dominant puppy, you will have to work very hard with it and work on yourself to be more dominant with it. Do the long downs several times a week, and practice "Nothing in Life is Free" with it, and make it work for every single thing it wants in life. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm  Get it into ongoing obedience classes for several months and work with this dog every single day. One thing to always remember is that a dog only does what a dog is allowed to do.
