Breathing problems in shih tzu

Question
Hi,

I have a 7mth old shih tzu and he suddenly did something scary just now. I caught him breathing with a hissing sound (like letting air out of a balloon), body tensed and in slight spasm (less than a normal vomit).

I rushed him to the vet and the vet explained that it's common in small and toy dogs and there's nothing much we can do except if it occur more often or last longer than 10 secs, medication need to be prescribed to control it. Nothing else is being done at the moment. My puppy looked as if nothing happened, could still run after me as i rushed to change and stop and did it again for a couple of seconds. In the car, he could still climb up to look outside the windown adn played with other dogs in the clinic.

Is this a common and 'harmless' problem for small/toy dogs? i just want to know - i'm very worried.

tks!!

Answer
Hello WK;
My Computer has been down...sorry for such a tardy response.
The problem could be genetic...I really think that you need to take the dog back to the vet, and get them to help you with the problem. And or give you a serious prognosis!
There may be no other option, as it sounds like a seizure, could be epilepsy.
You need a medical opinion and treatment right away!
Thanks for your question, and you can get in touch and let me know your results.
Best wishes,
Melissa
