Question
We have been wanting to get a dog, but I do not know which would be right for us.  I have 2 little boys (2 and 15 months) that are very active and playful, I have terrible allergies and can tolerate almost no hair, and we would like to have a smaller dog that can be kept indoors without tearing up the house.  We will be able to go out with the dog for exercise regularly and the 2 boys wouyld love to be able to have someone to roll around with other than me.  So I guess my criteria are small to medium and sturdy, sweet natured without being to excited, and no shedding.  Does that even leave me with anything?  I really appreciate any help you can give me.  God bless.

Answer
That definitely leaves you something :). My first breed of choice would be a miniature ( a TRUE mini not a toy) poodle, or a small standard. They are tough, SMART, non shedding, wonderful with kids and just an all around super breed. Great retrievers and just so smart they are scary. As with any breed,. teach your children not to hurt them, but they are very tolerant. Do NOT get a toy or have a breeder convince you that a large toy is a mini. Find a real mini breeder, a good , responsible one. And don't get the alpha pup in the litter. You want the mid range pup not the one that climbs all over you and pulls your children's clothes etc,.
Another good breed is a Scottish Terrier and another is a West Highland White. They are both non shedding, intelligent. though a bit stubborn breeds that are great with kids when raised with them<> I would tend just slightly toward the westie more than the scotty simply because the scotties are a bit more stubborn.  Those are my top three that fit your needs,. but I have to say the Poodle is far and away my favorite in your situation. The grooming is something you will deal with with any non shedding breed. Keep them in a very short kennel cut and you don't have to do it very often. They are CLEAN dogs, and don't normally have that doggie odor either. Love to swim, fetch, play games, and watch tv with the kids.
Hope this helps,
