Question
My husband and I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is approximately 5 1/2 months old. He is a very good boy so far. Doing well on potty training and listening. My husband wants to add an Australian Shepherd to our pack. I am reluctant because I keep reading how much work they are, and how much stimulation/energy they require. We play with our Cav a couple of times throughout the day, but usually it's tug of war or fetch, and often it's in the house, but we do go outside too. We have a decent yard (not fenced# but there is more front yard than back. We work slightly opposite schedules, so the dog isn't alone too long during the day #about 6 hours max). He has no separation anxiety, and does very well while we're gone. Would the fact that the Aussie would have a playmate keep him entertained and not destructive in my house? I can only find info on how much energy these dogs have, but have yet to see anything explaining the effect a second dog would have on the breed. If they would entertain each other, would that help keep the Aussie busy throughout the day, so we could keep with our schedule of play time? If not, are there any breeds that you would recommend fitting in with us? We do not currently have children, but hope to start a family soon.

Answer
Hello Janine,
Aussie's are wonderful dogs, but need a purpose and they need to work.  He/she may just herd your Cavalier around and be happy.  Get the smallest of the litter, if you get one.  Get the opposite sex of what you have now so there is harmony.  As long as the Aussie gets enough exercise and distractions, he/she should be happy with his life.  You might want to get some jumps and put them in the back yard and teach the Aussie to go over them.  Playing ball is also good exercise and going to the park or beach once a week should be enough.
