Question
Hi Caroline

Could you tell me please what was the traditional job title of person, who:

- caught and put down feral dogs (and cats);
- collected dead bodies of dogs, cats etc.;
- processed the dead bodies or sold them for further processing (rendering etc.);

in countries like U.S., UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand?

I would also appreciate, if you mentioned any Internet or printed resources about the history of such job (trade) and about services providing similar functions at present.

Thank you in advance

Dan

Answer
Hi Don,

In the present day, the Dog Warden is the UK equivalent to the "Dog Catcher" of the USA.

While I don't have an answer to your question, the National Dog Warden Association in the UK might be able to help you regarding their history. You can contact them here:

http://www.ndwa.co.uk/ndwa-contact.asp

A simple web search will give you the contact information for animal welfare groups in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
