Mouth Sore

Question
(It's okay if you are unable to asnwer this question) I have had my Cockerspaniel for about 15yrs now. He recently started to get a mouth sore that has just been getting bigger. I believe my other dog might have bit him on his lip and it has just grown. I have been trying to keep it clean and keeping medicine on it, but nothing seems to be working. This sore is on the outside of his mouth and it feels as if it is going into the bone. I was wondering if you had any opinion on how I could treat it more effectively. Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Courtney,

Having tried to treat your dog's mouth sore, but seeing that it's not getting any better, it's now time to have a veterinarian examine your dog.

It sounds as though this sore is infected, and your dog is probably in pain. The danger of not getting your dog treated, is that if this is an infection, it can go "systemic", and infect vital organs such as the brain, heart or liver.

Sadly, it's possible that this isn't an ordinary mouth sore. There is the possibility that this is a cancerous growth.

Please don't put off having your dog examined a day longer.

Best of luck,
Patti
